THE STrANGE RANGE

The Gold Range is a historic hotel and bar located in Yellowknife. Completed in 1957, it officially opened in May 1958 as a 52-room hotel with a café and cocktail bar. In 1972, it became the first bar in the Northwest Territories to serve draught beer.

Known as “The Strange Range,” the Gold Range quickly gained a reputation across the Canadian Arctic. During Yellowknife’s mining boom, it became a central gathering place for miners, pilots, and travelers, reflecting the rugged and fast-growing character of the town.

Over time, the bar developed a lively and distinctive atmosphere, where locals and visitors came together to share stories and experiences. Often described as one of the city’s last bastions of frontier culture, it has retained much of its original spirit despite the city’s modernization.

The Gold Range is especially known for its inclusive environment, welcoming people of all backgrounds and ages. Today, it remains a cultural landmark in Yellowknife—an enduring symbol of the North’s history, community, and character.
